There is no shortage of advice available on weight loss and dieting. Most people will embark on some kind of ‘weight watching' programme during their lifetime, if only to shed a few pounds before a holiday or to fit into a new outfit.

The initial burst of enthusiasm for a new diet tends to wane fairly quickly. Boredom and hunger manifest and the unused diet pills and drinks sit in the cupboard long after their sell-by date has passed.

The only diet that truly works is the one that YOU can live happily with in the long term. Most people want to feel reassured that they still have a wide choice of foods available so that the pleasure obtained from enjoying good food is not lost in the pursuit of good health. There is much more to healthy eating than salad!

In the meantime, here are a few ideas to help you get started on the road to a healthier you!

  • Avoid shopping for food when you're hungry
  • If you're feeling ‘peckish', drink a glass of water and wait for 5 minutes. You may not feel as hungry
  • Try to eat breakfast – skipping this important meal rarely pays off
  • Serve smaller portions of your favourite foods
  • On a pub night out, intersperse alcoholic drinks with soft drinks or non-alcoholic alternatives
  • Don't strive to achieve your teenage weight! The body is still developing during the teenage years
  • Beware of ‘Fat Free' foods which may be loaded with sugar
  • Take a little exercise each day – walking, swimming, cycling – or join a class
  • Weigh yourself just once each week, first thing in the morning
  • Talk positively to yourself, eg. ‘I always eat healthy food', ‘I'm in great shape!' It may sound silly but it can help.
